Hello relentless learner!

In this issue

We conclude our series on AI in the Workplace by resolving the seemingly contradicting advice from the authors of our featured books. This week we’re asking the questions: Which story should guide your career?

Your best response is not to hide, not to panic, and not to pretend this is not real. Learn, adapt, and participate — as a skilled professional, an informed citizen, and a human being navigating an age of powerful, changing technology.

😨 THE PAIN: Which story should guide my career?

One expert says: “Calm down. We survived the steam engine. We’ll adapt again.” Another says: “This time is different — we may be building something more powerful than humanity itself.” Both are serious scientists. So which story should guide your career?

💡 THE TAKEAWAYS: What the Book Teaches

Both lenses are right — on different timescales.

The key insight: these are not opposites. AI can reorganize the labor market like past industrial revolutions and carry longer-term risks that are genuinely new — on two different timescales of the same phenomenon.

⚡ ACTION: What You Can Do This Week

  • Near-term: Continue your task map (routine / AI-assisted / deeply human). Identify one skill to build that works alongside AI — communication, critical thinking, domain expertise, or leadership.

  • Long-term: Write three scenarios for your career — near-term good, near-term hard, and long-term transformative. For each, ask: what is one thing I can do this year that helps me in all three futures?

  • Both timescales: Ask your organization who is responsible for checking whether your AI systems are fair, safe, and aligned with your values. If nobody is — that’s the conversation to start.
